I absolutely love the magic preparing for the holidays brings, don't get me wrong I feel the pressure and stress also, but it's all about the moment. Our daily routine, obligations and demands can sap energy and leave you flat, even more reason to focus on the good and practice creating positive affirmations to turn those pesky negative things around.
These are some of my personal favorites:

I have plenty of time.
I am free.
It always works out.
In ten years will this really matter?
All I truly have is this moment, so enjoy it.
Everything happens for a purpose.
Think it, live it.
If you can imagine it, you can create it.

Along with simple but powerful positive self talk I always remember to celebrate myself, a small or large gift to myself always boosts my mood and instantly makes me feel grateful. Today I treated myself to a shampoo and blow styling at my favorite salon, it was wonderful. ( yes I go have my hair done) :)

If we do the same thing, we get the same results.

Feeling and being pretty are all in the same, you cannot have one without the other. So your magical journey begins with the little secret that only a few select people know and soon it’s all about the baby. Much to my dismay the waiting room of the Ob/Gyn’s office left me concerned, not for myself, but the future of all the expectant and new “ Moms”, let me explain, as a seasoned professional in the beauty industry I naturally notice hair, nails, skin well you get the idea. And as I sat waiting in the Dr’s office there are number of pregnant women waiting also, most of them in sweats and no make-up, really no attempt was made by these women to look good. My mind was racing…why? I thought. Does being pregnant mean you stop taking care of yourself? Is it all about the baby? How about MOM? Was this a silent epidemic? I began interviewing every expectant woman and clients who would answer my questions, what I found was shocking. Most women are truly not sure what to do and not to do while expecting…. I always took my knowledge for granted during my pregnancies and felt it was time to share my professional insight for the greater good of expectant women, thus MaternitySalon was born.

As a mom of two beautiful children I have experienced different and enlightening pregnancies which have forever changed my soul. The art of self care is first and foremost in a positive and beautiful pregnancy. I know this to be true because I have found the state of your mind and attitude toward yourself and where you put your focus on will reflect in your beauty experience. Did you ever notice how much fun it can be dressing up on Halloween and wearing out of character make-up? I love the thrill of playing around with make-up and expressing my inner child. On this rainy and cold Saturday on the East Coast I decided to fend of the chill with some baking, a great way to spend family time together and enjoy some goodies that are a bit healthier and waist friendly. Cooking and baking are my hobby and I enjoy tweaking recipes and creating a new healthy take on a classic. I am a lover of carrot cake and thought it was a yummy idea for today, and so I did.

Hair Cuts, Choosing A Hairstyle To Compliment Your Face

A fresh new hair cut can make you feel refreshed and perky. Here are my suggestions for a great cut to compliment your face shape:

The ideal face shape is oval, the general idea is to create an illusion of the 'ideal' face shape. During pregnancy women tend to retain fluid and swell especially the face, so here are a few tips to accentuate your face!!

ROUND- If your face is round ask for height and volume on top. Little or no volume at the sides; layer and textures work well.

SQUARE- If you have a square shaped face opt for volume around the areas between the temples and jaw. Avoid severe lines, soft wispy styles work well.

TRIANGULAR- If your face is triangular look for a style with volume at the temples, some height on top; a soft fringe works well, avoid a bob style.

OBLONG- If your face shape is oblong look for a style that is flattering on top. Hair should not be worn too long. Chin length is more desirable.

DIAMOND- If your face is diamond shaped opt for fullness at the forehead and jawline; avoid styles that lift away from the cheekbones.

Perhaps one of the most simple pleasures you can give yourself is a visit to your favorite salon. As a stylist and mother I can honestly relate to the lack of time and exhaustion many women are experiencing, but have no fear I have some easy tips to reboot yourself and feel refreshed. If we continue to do the same things, we will continue to get the same results, the simplest change can be wonderful.

Simple Tips To Reboot:

Schedule a blow-out at a salon.
Add a few clip-on hair extensions.
ALWAYS get a regular trim/haircut ( to avoid the notorious clip/ponytail)
Ask your stylist for a glaze or a few fresh highlights.
Schedule a mini-massage.
Buy NEW make-up.
Buy a new hand-bag.

An hour to yourself can make all the difference in the world, get creative with your treats and enjoy what ever makes you feel good. But remember your hair and make-up hold a tremendous influence on how you feel, if you look good you will most likely feel good!

Take A Holistic Approach to Beauty - Beauty Is In The Eye of the Beholder...

A subject I find interesting is the holistic approach to healing and beauty. Research has found that your state of mind or 'outlook' can impact your looks. Not so hard to believe if you show stress on your face and look dull when overloaded with worry (like I do). Our bodies are always sending us messages, but are we too busy to listen?

How To Radiate Beauty: ( My Personal Favorites)

Check in with yourself~ lay in bed at least 2 minutes and be thankful for at least 2 things each morning before you hit the ground running.
Take a technology break~ turn off all phones, computers etc. for an hour. Sit quietly and breathe.
Buy yourself a special treat~ a coffee, a book, a lip-gloss etc.
Spend ten minutes in nature~ and it's free!

Journal of A Mom: My Story - Dealing With Emotions After Having A Baby

On December 4^th, 2008 after much contemplation, self pity and feeling gross I decided to take control. I am sure my story is familiar to many new moms or moms in general, you just feel hopeless, and do not know where or how to start. Well, here is my story, which I will comment on daily in hopes that others will be inspired to dig out of the dumps.

I found myself with an 8 month old and could not believe that the time had passed so quickly, I knew my baby was growing but how did the time all mesh away before my eyes? On one hand I was happy, the sleepless nights were better, I mastered breastfeeding, and my son was doing all the great stuff babies do. So why was I so overwhelmed? Why did I feel sad, mad and downright shocked that 8 months had passed in a fog since my baby was born??? And I thought I was doing well this time around, guess not.

Since this is my second baby, after many years of saying never again I believed I would be in total control merely because I planned to have another baby. To my awe this couldn’t be further than the truth. All my meticulous financial, work, and personal prep went right out the window with “circumstance beyond my control.”

So, what do you do? I continued to ask myself over and over how could I be in a bad place again? I knew better, I planned better, I was better, yes this is all true, but the fact of the matter is you only have control over your own actions not the actions of others, and with this enlightenment I will execute my physical and mental recovery.

A true business woman at heart I plan and organize and do. So when things do not go as the fairytale said we all need a back-up plan and in real life having babies, financial stress, marital drama are all too real for most of us.

Safer Alternatives for Hair Smoothing - Keratin, Hair Relaxers

Frizzy, swollen, out of control hair during the summer months and humidity....sound familiar??? Well, to many women it is a daily struggle to maintain a smooth,sleek style during warmer weather and I can personally attest to that!

Conventional hair relaxers and 'Keratin' smoothing products may be toxic and full of unwanted fumes and chemicals you may want to avoid during pregnancy. There is limited proven scientific research on the subject and I feel you may want to err on the side of caution during this tender and special time. With the demand for safer and non-toxic products many manufacturers are stepping up to the plate, organic hair color is readily available to salons and a very vegan and non-toxic smoothing product I personally use and like very much (Reallisse by Zerran) see attached video!

The safe cosmetics act was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, this bill aims to help regulate manufacturing and labeling of cosmetics. Most women use cosmetics on a daily basis and their content and safety should be clearly addressed.
Through research I have found that there may be a number of toxic ingredients in cosmetics and beauty products you may want to check labels for and avoid.
These are some of the top offenders:

Synthetic Polymers
Synthetic Colors
PEG
Ureas
Parabens
Formaldehyde
Quats

And the list goes on.........perhaps checking labels and being more selective on the products we purchase is a simple way to start cleaning up our make-up bags, there are a number of wonderful organic products on the market available at local health food stores and the internet. I found a few good sites that sell organic make-up and cosmetics and love it! I have personally converted to all organic hair color and am continually seeking better, safer products. I know the clean up will take time and patience, but living environmentally friendly to the earth, my clients and myself are worth the effort. Stretch Marks

Most of us cringe at the thought of stretch marks! But the truth of the matter is 90% of women may experience them! They most often appear during rapid teen growth spurts, during quick weight gain or loss and pregnancy. They may also be hereditary due to the inherited composition of connective tissue. Stretch marks are caused by the rapid stretching of the skin and are not easy to get rid of. Research has shown that the sooner you start to treat the skin, the greater chance you will have to make the skin more pliable and less likely to strain.

Moisturizing three-four times a day with products containing shea butter, vitamin e and vitamin c may be helpful.
I can attest to my own experience with two pregnancies and very limited stretch marks to show for it, again I feel all aspects must be taken into consideration including your body frame (how much more stretching a petite frame will endure as opposed to a larger one), genetics and maybe good moisturizers to help along the way. There is sure to be conflicting stories due to the difference in everyone's pregnancy and situation. I found my favorite products to be Vitamin E oil and a product called Bio-oil, I used these products daily and had great results.
As with all beauty treatments, check with your doctor and always do what is best for you.

Many new and expectant moms struggle with the pressure and stress of deciding to leave their career or continue to work. In todays evolving society women have come a long way, this generation is truly free to choose any career and flourish. But still women are carrying the brunt of home responsibilities, not to say that there are not a number of qualified and wonderful stay at home dads, but the statistics show women still carry most childcare responsibilities in the the home.

Each mom has her own desires for what she feels is right for her, not all women are cookie cutter moms that will sacrifice her own career and time to join the PTA. Now if you choose this path, that is great because in the balance of life we all need to follow our own life purpose and your part is just as important, while for some it may mean forging the way for the future women (our daughters) to thrive.

Regardless of the choices you make it must be a personal one, not based on outside judgement or society dictating what you should do. There is always someone who seems to "know it all", but the truth is you must follow your true self and inner guide, a happy child is truly the most important thing.
There is no right or wrong answer to this question, so don't stress because ultimately you can always change your mind at any time, it's your choice.

Be gentle with yourself, take time to feel and do what is best for you.

Not a day goes by that I don't feel compelled to improve the quality of The Beauty Service, with so much positive movement toward better self care and environmental awareness. I feel always moving toward better and safer ways to live our lives. In the beauty salon there is tons of exposure to a barrage of different chemicals and airbourne pollutants, as a seasoned beauty professional I am always concerned about my health and my client's health as well. I have researched and found a number of wonderful organic hair products including organic hair color which work just wonderfully!

As a health conscious consumer you deserve to have choices in what chemicals you are exposed to while beautifying yourself. Many consumers and professionals alike may not truly give this topic much attention, I do believe that as with all product exposure we all need to be vigilant in caring for our bodies and limiting chemical exposure. All products from skin care, make-up, hair color, hair products, nail products etc.....are in available today in organic forms. I personally love using all organic beauty products on myself and my clients offering them a positive, environmentally friendly experience.

Pregnancy....what's it to you?

When I think of what to Beauty truly means I can not help but think pregnancy! Of course there are new things we experience and some may be more challenging than others, and with positive thoughts and dreams you can create the pregnancy experience you deserve.

Through many years of working in the beauty industry I have learned that beauty is an encompassing thought pattern which can easily be brought into life on a daily basis. Beauty to me means inner and outer love, taking time for yourself, acceptance, joy etc.....nurture yourself and enjoy the moment.

I have experienced two pregnancies, one that I struggled through the whole 9 months because I was consumed with fear and was not aware that I had a right to take good care of myself emotionally. I had been told to eat right and get ready for the baby, nurturing myself and beauty did not exist and my experience mirrored my lack of self love and attention.

Years later I was blessed with my second pregnancy, only this time I applied and lived new acts of self-love and nurturing. I focused on only the positive and released all the negative thoughts. I followed my own advice and looked and felt fabulous! My second pregnancy was an awesome experience full of beauty and fulfillment. I truly believe you must put yourself first and look your best (hair, nails, skin etc) before you can give to anyone else, the amount of positive energy that I experienced was my inspiration for sharing my years of beauty knowledge and personal growth.

Here are some of my favorite ideas:

Schedule yourself on the calender (yes the calender)
Knowledge is power; know your hair color options during pregnancy (Tons of info on maternitysalon hair color pages)
Schedule a professional "Blow Dry" (it is so awesome, I love this!)
Do your hair and make-up every day regardless of your schedule (it is for you)
Refresh your make-up bag with new items; beauty counters are a great resource to get new stuff and affordable with all the promos they run.(gift with purchase is one of my favorite!)
Take time to play; what did you love to do when you were a child? Try it!
Get regular manicures and pedicures
Barter for services with other moms
Wear trendy and put together maternity outfits; drop the sweats!
Treat yourself at least once a week to a special gift, just for you. ( it could be as simple as a special coffee or lip gloss)
Tell yourself you love yourself and your growing belly!
Be open and honest with your hair needs to your stylist, it's about you!

As many of us already know, there are so many obstacles to conquer during pregnancy. Our hairshould be a pleasure for us not a chore. The reality is not all of us are fortunate enough to have our “Ideal” hair texture or curl.

So here are my professional recommendations for the best results while having chemical services during pregnancy. I will be elaborating on the different types of perms and relaxers available today from a professional salon.

A perm is usually classified as a chemical applied to the hair with some type of roller to alter the curl pattern, thus making straight hair curly. A relaxer is usually classified as chemical applied to overly curly hair to remove the curl.

Both are considered: “Chemical Texture” services and should be performed by a professional. There are a few options you may opt for during pregnancy.

1		An Ammonia-Free wave-usually there is very little odor, but are still as strong.
2		A Thio-Free wave usually contains milder chemicals and are marketed as less damaging.
3		Low-PH waves- usually are weak and do not provide a firm curl, these are marketed as alternative waves or body waves.
SELECTING THE RIGHT CHEMICAL SHOULD BE LEFT TO THE PROFESSIONAL, BUT AS A CLIENT YOU NEED TO KNOW YOUR CHOICES.

In my professional experience I have seen many successful perms and body waves given during pregnancy, but remember as with any hormonal change in the body a slightly off result is always possible, usually a weaker curl than desired. If you have extremely fine, straight hair a body texture wave may be a great option.

Relaxers

Chemical Texture services that straighten or remove excessive curl also have a variety of choices.

1		Thio Relaxers-usually contain a higher concentration of thio than perm, usually this product is used to straighten extremely curly hair.
2		Hydroxide Relaxers-usually contain lye, which is a powerful caustic chemical which is also used in depilatories and drain cleaners (yes, cleaners).
3		Low-PH Relaxers-usually are compatible with color treated hair and are low in PH, these products are marketed as mild alternative relaxers.

As with all your beauty choices always remember to ask for all your options, a professionally, well trained salon should offer a variety of options, if they don’t, well find a salon who respects your miracle and cares about you.

Beauty Product Spending

We all want to look our best and since the beginning of time women have tried and conquered a multitude of beauty creams, colors and cosmetics. Let's face it, we love beauty products! And rightfully so, it is a simple pleasure in life to purchase a new product and nurture ourselves. So, when I read the stats on how consumers spend and decide what to buy it intrigues me!

Honestly nothing makes me feel better than buying make-up, hair products, nail polish etc.. it is an instant mood booster, not to mention the satisfaction of self care I feel from the simplest beauty purchases.

Here are some fun facts:

69% of consumers use beauty products to make sure their hair and skin stays healthy.
75% of consumers feel ,"When they look good, they feel better".
70% of consumers feel, "If I look good, I will be successful".
80% of consumers spent the same amount of money on beauty products in 2010; recession or not!
71% of consumers cut out on their budget elsewhere ; not beauty products.
70% of consumers use hair color to "Get rid of grey!"

Regardless if these figures hold true for you or not, it proves overall that beauty products are an integral part of our daily needs to nurture and beautify ourselves.

Allergic To Hair Color?

This morning I read an article in the media about a teen who was very ill after a home hair coloring. Of course this instantly drew my attention and made me wonder if consumers realize that hair color can be an allergen like any other chemical? And does anyone read the warnings and follow the manufacturers directions? Obviously, not!

I feel it is important that all consumers and clients know what to do and expect from a salon and over the counter products.

The U.S. Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic act prescribes that a predisposition test or patch test be given 24-48 hours prior to using an aniline derivative tint (compounds that diffuse into the hair shaft when combined with hydrogen peroxide; permanent tint) A patch test consists of a small amount of the desired formula applied to the back of the ear or inside the elbow with a sterile cotton swab, leave undisturbed for 24 hours and then examine area. A negative skin test will show no redness or swelling. A positive will show redness, rash or welt.

When the results are positive, you should not use the product tested. I always recommend a patch test for any hair color being used.

Also remember that our body chemistry may change due to pregnancy, medications or medical conditions which may alter the outcome of a color or any chemical service.

Be well informed, ask your Doctor and always follow the manufacturers directions if you must color your hair at home.

I did see a number of "organic" hair color products at my local health food store, but once again I stress the importance of reading ingredients, directions and getting your Doctor's approval.

You need a "Time Out"

Today I was inspired to address an issue that I hold close to my heart which I seldom call "NO TIME!" As I stood on line at the local supermarket checking out, I noticed a woman with two small children struggling to load groceries, keep her screaming kids at bay and check out. Does this sound all too familiar? Well to me it does and too often women are consumed with our daily chores to take a moment for ourselves. What truly caught my eye was the roots and grey hair that was draining this beautiful moms look, it broke my heart and this is a common problem that I see way too often!

As a busy mother of two I know how difficult it is to find the time and money to keep yourself looking good, here are some creative ways to help you find the time and the money!

Phone a friend- exchange an hour or so with another mom by babysitting for each other. (and do something nice for yourself)
Exchange gift cards with other moms- not everyone likes or uses the same thing and many gift cards simply go to waste!
Call your local beauty school and book a service with a senior student; they are usually closely supervised, a great way to save money and still treat yourself!
Barter with other moms for services or business exchanges; this is a fun way to get and give what you need without spending a dime.
If you can't afford to go to a salon for color; cover your grey with one of my over the counter recommendations.
Give yourself the gift of time, you are worthy.

Go for volume this holiday and be a hit!
Volume is sexy this season, or any time for that matter. Red carpet looks recently by Madonna and Drew Barrymore were great examples. One of the hottest and trendiest looks are a "milkmaid" braid with a high ponytail. If you have shorter hair a set of clip-on hair extensions to match your color can be braided and added to add length and interest!

You can find clip-on hair extensions in various lengths and colors at most retail beauty supplies, I have seen them at Sephora and on line. Also add clip-ons for the illusion of sexy length with some tousled curls for a special evening or event and steal the show. Most extensions real hair or synthetic can be styled easily, just be careful of extreme heat on synthetic hair.

It is so much fun to add clip-on hair extensions for a new look any time you need a change, so have fun and be creative.

With all the media coverage on Keratin smoothing treatments aka Brazilian Straightening I have been bombarded by questions and concerns about the service.

Keratin I understand is a product which layers upon the hair shaft and is sealed by heat to eliminate frizzy/curly/unruly hair lasting about 6 weeks. I have had both positive and negative feedback from clients, some love it, some did not like the experience. The service may consist of a pre-cleansing shampoo, a blow dry, application of keratin liquid, another blowdry and flat ironing. (procedures may vary)

In my personal experience the product may cause eye irritation to client and stylist, may cause nose irritation and headache. There is a clearly visible foggy mist coming off the heated hair, which fogs up the entire salon, may need proper ventilation.

Some products may contain formaldehyde or aldehyde.

My personal choice is not to perform the service on myself or others, the effects I personally felt led me to my personal decision about this service.

As with all chemical services, I always recommend do plenty of research, ask your physicians opinion and follow your intuition it always knows the truth!

These are solely my personal opinions.

Holiday Me Time

Here we are, another holiday season is here and most of us are rushing and stressed. With all the extra chores and entertaining we surely forget the most important gift, nurturing ourselves.

Here are some great tips to help you maintain a balanced and joyous holiday:

Put yourself on the calender/schedule (at least 30 minutes a day!)
Use the schedule time to take a lovely hot bath, meditate, pray, listen to your favorite music in a quiet special place, get a yummy treat and feed your soul.
Schedule a blow out at a salon, this is a quick and easy feel good treat (one of my favorites!)
Schedule a sitter at least once a week for two hours and do something nurturing for yourself!
A clear glaze (can be found in the haircolor aisle of most drug/supermarket) fast, easy, no mess and instantly adds a fabulous shine to all hair types!!!
Enjoy the moment , focus on ONLY the good stuff and be thankful.

Why do so many people think they are obligated to cut their hair short after the birth of a child or certain birthday?

This has become a silly stereotype in our society, you suddenly crossover to "mommy-zone" or "forty" and off with her hair! The truth of the matter is short hair can be more work to maintain than your long tresses which can be tossed into a number of trendy and fabulous up-dos in minutes. (check out my "How To" classes on "Edufire" on line learning.)

Long hair if cut and maintained well can look fabulous , many older women look great with long hair, which can be flattering on a number of different face shapes and hair types and actually make many people look younger.

The bottom line is this: Women should wear what they personally feel good about, no matter what their age or family status.

Fall Color

As the seasons change we need to refresh our haircolor. After all the drying sun and sea can cause. A perfect cocktail for dull overstressed hair is a "Demi-Glaze".

A Demi color consists of a high shine producing product which is usually low or ammonia free, deposit only color (can not lighten) and offers phenomenal coverage for blending and glossing dry tresses.

Demi colors come in all shades and is best if used within a two shade level of your present color (if you are seeking refreshment). If darkening or adding some warm tones is your need, this can be achieved easily also.

One of my favorite things is simply painting on ( bayalage) a warm, richer tone to lighter hair for some sweet mocha and caramel lowlites. An all over color refresher can be done with clear or touches of gentle vanilla or cappuchino, the combos are endless.

Do not become a prisoner to roots and high maintenance hair, especially in this economic climate where an educated consumer is a smart consumer.

How often do feel sheer terror finding a new Hairstylist???

According to the many clients I have interviewed, it is very common! Fact of the matter is that your hairstylist may be just as important (if not more) as your doctor! We all know a bad hair day is much worst than a sick day, but I can't help wonder-- why are the wonderful, competent stylist so illusive?

The truth is they are right in front of you, you just need a sure fire system to find your perfect match, here are a few great tips for interviewing a new stylist.

1. When calling the salon ask who specializes in your hair type.

2. Ask if she has extensive training and to what degree.

3. Stop by the salon and see the stylist’s work.

4. Book a consultation before you move forward with the actual appointment.

5. While speaking to the stylist is she/he attentive? Or do they interrupt? Are they listening and then repeating YOUR wishes or focused on theirs?

6. It is your hair, it is your money….do not feel bad telling the stylist exactly what you dislike before the service, this leaves less room for disappointment.

7. If you say “Do whatever you want”…don’t expect what you want.

8. Inquire about the products being used (reference to Haircolor Page) for your best choice.

9. If you feel uncomfortable, it is the wrong fit.

10. Interview another stylist.

Anyone with curly hair knows the challenges of managing their locks. During pregnancy hair can change dramatically, curls may droop and curls may form. As hormonal fluctuations occur many hair changes may be in the balance. To keep your curly hair looking great here are some great tips from our top experts and moms!
1) Change up shampoos, opt for no sulfate products.
2) Moisturize hair daily, this will control frizzy fly away hair.
3) Apply a drop of Silk Nectar serum to wet hair BEFORE applying styling product.

As the days get shorter and we prepare for the winter it’s always a great idea to nurture your skin. Our skin is the largest organ of the body and yet so many of us pay very little attention to it.

A few great tips for a fresh look is to try a new skin cleanser, don’t get stuck in the rut of common skincare rituals, instead opt for a new and refreshing product.

1. Treat your face and body to an exfoliation at least once a week, this removes dead skin and allows for a more radiant skin tone to shine through.

2. Always moisturize and preferably with a tinted moisturizer that contains an SPF, we all need protection even in the winter and the tint will give your face a healthy glow. Try not to use extremely hot water in the shower, this will cause extra dryness on your skin.

3. Try airbrush foundation it allows for a flawless finish and is easy to use, you can find this in Sephora, ‘Christian Dior, Airflash.’

4. Try using spray tan on your face and body, its safe and lasts about a week or longer.

5. Mineral make-up is a great fix all it is anti-inflammatory to the skin and covers a ton of stuff with a stroke of the brush.

Were all tired and can’t wait to hit the sack, but don’t skip washing and moisturizing your face before bed, make-up and dirt left on the skin overnight can trigger breakouts. This is also a perfect time to attack those fine lines which may be starting around your eyes. A really great product, which you can find in Bath & Body Works, is Dr. Wexler’s skin care line. Money Saving Tips On Hair Care.

In these troubled economic times many moms are facing more pressure than usual. Not only do we as moms have to do a lot of budgeting for the household but sometimes the budget includes your personal beauty and hair care. But even with the money crunch we still need to look good, so here are a few of my professional tips on saving money when trying to budget. No sense in looking bad and going down with the stock market.

1. If all else fails keep your hair professionally cut, ask your stylist for a dry cut or skip the blowout and styling, this can save you money.

2. For those women who color their hair: Hair color can be a challenge, if you normally visit the colorist every 4-6 weeks for a touch-up, simply extending it to 8 weeks with an at home root touch-up in between can cut big expenses. (There are great root touch-up products on the market at your local drugstores.) Simply choose a color close to what you normally use, one shade lighter than usual will guarantee softer results. When purchasing over the counter hair color, always remember these four rules:

· Cool, ash, drab means cuts reddish tones, never use on light ends; it does not cover grey well.

· Neutral, natural is always the best choice for grey coverage, do not run through on dry ends (may cause dull results) opt for a glaze in a lighter shade to refresh your shaft and ends.

· Gold, warm, honey means yellow and orange undertones, unless you really want a WARM color stay clear.

· COLOR DOES NOT LIGHTEN COLOR; do not attempt to lighten hair by using a lighter shade. Opt for highlighting, home kits may cause tiger stripes, when using a paint on kit, do not move hair after painting on highlights, do not glob color near roots (body heat causes bleach to run and develop fast), keep streaks at least 2 inches apart.

3. Also new to the “over the counter” collection are really nice Glazes. A glaze imparts a fabulous shine and blends grey hair gently. Choose a color close to what you have and if you’re blonde choose a lighter shade than your current color. A glaze will give your hair that polished look without the price.

4. Try to shop at discount beauty supplies and always read the ingredients, some reasonable products do contain natural or botanical ingredients.

5. If you absolutely can not afford to use good hair products use baby shampoo, it is gentle and will not strip your color.

6. If you still want and can see the stylist you can stretch your buck, ask for a more natural hair color, and avoid high maintenance color and cuts.

7. For your nail care, opt for natural nails with an occasional manicure opposed to being strapped to acrylic or gel fills.

8. After a waxing ask for a hair retarding cream to use at home, this will slow down the hair growth and hopefully buy you a few more weeks between waxing.

9. Skip the tanning salon, (hopefully you’re not tanning at this stage if you’re expecting) a great find is tanning spray also found in your local drug store and for a fraction of the cost look golden and gorgeous.

Remember it is more important to take care of you during tough times, look like a million with out spending a fortune.

By far one of the most asked questions in the salon industry today. We thrive on maintaining a trendy and fashionable look for the workplace which lets face it, is where most women are today. And even if they are not, everyone likes to look good and be well groomed. So to answer the question, here is my professional opinion, first and foremost follow your Doctors instructions, second follow your gut and own personal feelings on this choice.

The facts and findings are as follows:

1. To date there is no concrete evidence on this topic through studies or research to prove that any type of hair coloring is unsafe.

2. In the past 23 years in the industry many colorists and stylists have continued to color their hair while pregnant, primarily due to the knowledge of the variety of different procedures available in color application.

3. There are a number of choices available today in hair coloring, including but not limited to off the scalp hi-liting, non aggressive demi colors, rinses and so many more.

4. You have the option to choose what works best for you, I suggest that during this special time when you are expecting, even if you never did before-- you should seek a professional colorist at a maternity friendly salon and have a consultation. Its February already, 2008 seems like its already flying by. Did you end up starting those New Year’s resolutions or are you procrastinating?

If you’re expecting, I’m sure you have a lot on your plate as far as getting ready for the maternity journey and preparing for baby. With all the new changes and adjustments; sometimes “Taking Care of You” takes a back seat.

To help you start “Taking Care of You,” you have to evaluate your daily activities. Well, now you ask, “What have I done for myself lately?” Ladies, this is an important question. It turns out many of us are so caught up with taking care of everyone else that we forget to do the little things for ourselves.

Beginning something new and fresh for you is always exciting but requires some effort. If you want to look and feel better while preparing for a new addition to your family, let’s start with getting you on the right track with your beauty regiment.

Let’s start with your hair: Taking care of your hair, makes a world of difference on how you feel and perceive yourself. If you put your hair up everyday with a scrunchy or clip you really need to STOP. This tragic behavior usually results in falling into a rut. So, I would reiterate my usual advice on making an appointment with a stylist. If you don’t have one, ask around and see which salon or stylist falls into your budget. Remember, you don’t have to go to a poshy salon or spend a fortune. There are options and some really talented stylists out there. So, a cute hair cut and some natural looking hi-lites will make you look and feel better. This can easily translate to your “Mommy Makeover.” Buy new products for your hair, MaternitySalon offers a complete hair care line especially for moms. Check it out!

Moving onto your skin care, I’ve come across a lot of great products lately for skin. One great facial cleanser you should use to get rid of makeup at night or morning is called, “St. Ives. Facial Cleanser.” Getting into a routine with washing your face before bed and when you wake really helps your pores to stay clean and refreshed. After you wash your face, I suggest using a face cream by “Neutrogena, Oil of Olay, or Dove” look for the specific type of skin you have and use that product.

After two weeks, you will see a huge difference. Remember, if you’re going to through some rough dry patch problems you should consult with your doctor about using anything. Lastly, what about the rest of your body, well I’m a firm believer in using “Palmer’s Coco Butter” for your belly (to avoid stretch marks) and everywhere else for hydration. After you shower and your skin is still moist is usually the best time to apply. Also, dehydration is a big culprit for bad or dry skin, so remember to drink your water. (Do you ever wonder why you see models or actresses drinking water, it’s to keep their skin looking beautiful!)

Now, onto the fun part, MAKE-UP! In completing your own “Mommy Makeover,” choosing great makeup does make a difference. I have to be honest with you and tell you that to look good you don’t need a ton of gook on your face. To start your beauty makeup application, you can apply foundation if that’s your preference.

There is a really great foundation out made by “Revlon called, Custom Creations.” This foundation is light and airy and really can be matched to your skin tone. There is also SPF 15 in this product, so it makes you look good and protects your skin at the same time. In using foundation, only apply a dab to your finger or sponge and use sparingly around your eyes, forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. Remember, less is more.

Next, I would apply a mineral based bronzer, which can be lightly dusted on for a pretty glow. Yes, organization, this is the culprit if you stay organized your mind will follow suit. As a new mom we will tend to lose our days to poopy diapers and bottles, there is an escape and it’s free.
Follow these six steps to “Me Time.”
1) Plan at least three mall-walking outings a week. Once you are familiar with your baby’s schedule plan a trip to the mall in the morning, this is a great excuse to walk and exercise and also put yourself together for the day. (Some malls actually have these walking groups organized, inquire with Mall Security or Administration.)

2) Try to follow the same routine daily, for example-wake up 20 minutes before your baby, shower, make your favorite morning beverage, put on your favorite music, style your hair and apply your make-up. It’s easier than it sounds.

3) Reward yourself with a yummy specialty coffee at the mall or buy a new lip gloss, buy a trendy bag, buy a new pair of shoes, book a massage, one thing a week will make you feel renewed.

The horror of the hospital- Intense fear of the unknown, loss of control, will they hurt me? The answer was facing my fear, I felt like a superhero when I came out of the delivery room alive and well, my mind had to be put in a calm state, focusing on good things and repeating positive thoughts really worked.

· Will I be a good mom? You will be a great mom it’s hardwired in you, but if you are not happy with yourself or feel any unresolved issues from the past now is the time to talk to someone and heal yourself, you deserve to feel whole, and your baby deserves you.

· To work or not to work? Worrying will not make a magical answer appear, but what will work is a plan. Write all the pros and cons to your personal situation about work and weigh all your options. Today more than ever corporations are trying to accommodate moms with tele-commuting options and part-time flex hours. If you have a job, you could always ask your boss if there are options available..(doesn’t hurt to ask)

· Research your options early on and know your options. Sometimes small changes make a huge difference, only you know what is best for you and your family unit, we are all different, make your decision based on your gut, and be proud whatever it is.

· There are so many different thoughts a pregnant woman may have, just keep your fears in perspective a well maintained body and mind is the best defense for negative karma.

When you pick up the dictionary and look up the word “mother” it truly should read- the best multi-tasker around. As if we didn’t know why, we’re mothers to our babies, babysitters and lovers to our husbands, therapist’s to our friends and family, business women, corporate executives, hairdressers, waitresses and every other profession known to the modern world. But through all this we get through, amazing isn’t it?
Through the years in the salon business I’ve met numerous wonderful women who were truly amazing and yet, I learned that it’s not always what it seems. For instance there was Sadie a bubbly, attractive, “mom of the year,” mother of four with a gorgeous home, involved in all her children’s activities, minivan and so on. Well, there was a dark side to Sadie, you see she was married over 21 years to the same boring, inattentive man, dedicated her entire existence, health, good eating habits, and self worth to keeping it all together, until one day she woke up and realized she lost herself.
As her personal colorist for over 15 years it was impossible not to feel her pain, sometimes your hairdresser does truly become your best friend, she slowly emerged from her hell by taking better care of herself, losing weight, getting back in the workforce part-time ding something she’d given up years ago to raise her babies and simply scheduling time for “me time”.

Pack Your Bags….What to bring to the Hospital.

Before you know it time to go to the hospital and have your baby will be here. With my first pregnancy I went to the hospital with all the wrong stuff, and none of what I really needed. Here is my list of what you need to have a pleasant hospital stay that will be memorable. These simple lists will allow you more fun and flexibility while recuperating.

1) A few pairs comfy stretchy panties (they’ll probably get stained because you’ll have the mother of all periods) the panties the hospital supplies are annoying.
2) A comfy robe and flip-flops or slippers
3) A large zip-loc bag with a travel pack of baby wipes (they are great to freshen up and remove make-up), a travel size bottle of shampoo, conditioner, and a fun upbeat body wash, a few razors and scented moisturizer, a minty foot cream to soothe dry and tired feet and legs.
4) If you plan to nurse pack your nursing bra, a soothing breast cream (your nipples will get sore).
5) For your sanity and soul pack headphones or your I-pod, a blow-dryer, and some mini travel styling products, you’ll be so glad to wash and style your hair while in the hospital
6) Must have make-up minimals are: a mineral-make-up powder one shade darker than your skin, an eyeliner, one shimmery and neutral shadow, mascara and a big fluffy make-up brush and lip-gloss (a hint of pink makes everyone look good).

A Mommy Valentine…Pregnancy the Second Time Around

With all the fabulous and strange changes going on in my “pregnant” life right now I wonder how it will all work out, I know it will (only because it always does) but as a pregnant women, working mom, wife, housekeeper, chef etc…I can’t help but feel slight well (lots) of stress. As I reflect on my last pregnancy which was almost six years ago, a lot has changed. Along with the medical advancements and changes which are fabulous for example the new 3/4D ultrasound wow what a miracle to see that babies face with such detail, I found this to be totally moving.

Pregnancy in my opinion has two sides, the good and the blah, my second pregnancy came after much thought, fear and emotional searching for the first pregnancy was a nightmare (mildly put). From the worst results possible on my AFP blood test which proved to be totally wrong of course after I nearly had a breakdown from fear and worry to full bed rest from five months on, a home nurse checking my urine and blood pressure daily and too much more nonsense to write about. For all you ladies reading this, I am not trying to alarm you, this was my story, and through all this I felt like I was on an emotional rollercoaster. The light at the end of the tunnel did come…with an awesome (comparing to many other stories I’ve heard) labor and delivery experience. Oh by the way to make matters hairier, I was deathly afraid of the hospital, well guess what I conquered that anxiety with the birth of my beautiful, healthy baby. All I can say is I never felt more in control and found this awesome inner strength I never knew I had.

Now almost six years later I find myself pregnant with my second child and having a totally 360 degree experience. Not only was I not extremely nauseated by everything and everyone but I found myself able to cope with the slight discomfort of nausea. I was overseas on vacation when the shock hit, no period, not menopause oh-oh it must have been the bon-voyage party my husband and I had that…well you know the rest. As this second pregnancy progressed I learned the mystery of being a mom for the second time came with new and positive changes. I continued to work and live my daily life without much change, I went through the whole first prenatal visit and blood work uneventfully, the complete opposite of my first experience.
The days turned to weeks to months, at seven months all is well and I’ve realized anything is possible, I really feel OK and there is no drama. The usual pregnancy stuff is part of my life but I’m at peace with my growing belly, my old fears and the expectations of labor. The time between my pregnancy has brought me great wisdom on taking care of myself, listening to my body and intuition and having a positive mental attitude, I believe all these small changes in me brought big changes to how my body accepted being pregnant. So sit back, reflect on what is really important, enjoy your Valentines Day as a tribute to self love and your beautiful miracle, no matter how yucky you may feel, this too shall pass. Looking good makes a world of difference when you are pregnant, your body is changing dramatically and your hormones can make you feel out of sorts.

My favorite New Year pick me up is a new cut and color. A simple change can make a huge difference. The greatest feeling is when you look good, I can recall the influx of clients who have just had it with their look and the winter blues, I always recommend you update or “tweek” change is having a glaze (gloss) added to your color or some new fresh hi-lites. 2) Synthetic Hair is usually realistic and hard to spot, they are a great value and less expensive, they do not need restyling after cleaning, they do not frizz or flatten, synthetic wigs come in array of colors and styles. they do not fade and last much longer than human hair. The disadvantages are if you have fine hair a synthetic wig may be too dense and thick and look unnatural, hair coloring a synthetic wig is not a good idea, and a synthetic wig can not withstand extreme heat from styling tools.

3) Quality and cost of different wigs: Usually the old cliché “You get what you pay for” stands true when purchasing a wig, here are a few key factors to consider. Wigs are usually made of three different types of hair, European which is top of the line, hair from Asia and India which is middle of the road and human and mixed animal hair (yes animal) mostly yak, angora, horse and sheep and is the least expensive. And then you have your selection of synthetic wigs which are made of man made materials.

4) Hair Extensions and hairpieces also come in natural hair and synthetic materials. They can be applied in a number of different ways vary in price. Remember to always ask about the maintenance requirement of different extension applications; they vary from minimal to high maintenance and cost.

A) Bonded extensions-hair wefts or tracks of hair are attached with an adhesive against the root line by the scalp-generally lasting 2-4 weeks before maintenance is needed.

B) Track/sew in extensions-hair wefts are attached to a cornrow (a narrow row of a braid tight to the scalp) with a sew in method with a blunt rounded custom designed needle. Maintenance is usually dependant on your hair type, this procedure works well with coarse, strong hair.

C) Fusion extensions- hot or cold are attached in small sections close to the root with a special tool, maintenance depends on your hair type, and these extensions are usually costly.

During the normal course of our daily life we all lose hair every day, this is a normal cycle. But when we are afflicted with excess hair loss it can be emotionally impacting.

Over 62 million people in the U.S. deal with abnormal hair loss, formally called (alopecia). As a professional stylist and educator I am usually the first to notice and diagnose the problem. The medical community does not seem to recognize hair loss as a medical condition, but the stress and fear felt by those who suffer is very real.

Pregnancy all too often a culprit in “postpartum alopecia” is usually caused by hormonal fluctuations and can vary from minimal hair loss to large patches of hair falling out up to 9 months after delivery. Some women experience little or no change, it varies by individual. The good news is, I have found and used numerous solutions to get my clients through these tough times.

Hair loss is particularly devastating to women, they want to hide it from everyone, and let’s face it we all want and need to feel good about ourselves.

I particularly recall a client who suffered such devastating hair loss with each of her three (yes, three) pregnancies, she was a lovely, upbeat women, but as soon as she delivered her babies the trauma would begin.

As a professional and a mom myself I felt her pain, I immediately compiled a fix-it plan for her hair. First I recommended a combination of hair extensions that I strategically placed throughout her scalp with a subtle variety of tones to look naturally hilted. Then I selected a group of “clip-on” extensions she could throw in at home anytime. These work great! They are available in all lengths, colors and even pre-curled or set.
